Hormone Replacement Therapy in Edina & Bloomington

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) helps restore balance and relieve the symptoms of hormonal changes in both men and women. For women, treatment often includes estrogen, progesterone, and sometimes testosterone to ease hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and to help improve sexual drive. For men, HRT typically focuses on testosterone, which can boost energy, support libido, and help maintain muscle strength. By restoring hormone levels, HRT can enhance overall well-being and quality of life.

What Is HRT?

Bioidentical hormones are molecularly identical to those produced by your body—unlike older forms, which may come from horse estrogen or synthetic analogues. This precision means your body recognizes and uses them naturally, often resulting in fewer side effects and smoother results. Treatments can be administered via pellets, creams, patches, or pills—but we often recommend pellet therapy for its consistent hormone delivery over months at a time. Many of our patients report clearer skin, improved energy, better sleep, and stronger hair and nails as their hormone levels normalize—helping restore your overall quality of life.

Why Choose Skin Rejuvenation Clinic for HRT?

How it Works

Step 1: Hormone Replacement Therapy Assessment

Hormone Replacement Therapy Assessment
At Skin Rejuvenation Clinic, your HRT assessment includes a thorough review of your medical and family history, along with an in-depth discussion of your symptoms, lifestyle, and overall health concerns. Diagnostic testing—such as initial blood work and a 5-week follow-up—helps evaluate your hormone levels and overall wellness. With this comprehensive assessment, our providers gain a clear understanding of your unique hormonal profile and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals.

Step 2: Hormone Replacement Therapy Treatment Planning

Hormone Replacement Therapy Treatment Planning
HRT treatment planning takes a personalized approach, starting with a comprehensive medical evaluation to review your symptoms, health history, and risk factors. Blood tests are used to measure hormone levels and guide decisions about which hormones—such as estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone—may be most beneficial. Each plan outlines the proper dosage and duration of therapy, along with regular follow-up visits to monitor progress, adjust treatment as needed, and ensure both safety and effectiveness.

Step 3: Treatment - Hormone Replacement Therapy with Pellets

Hormone Replacement Therapy with Pellets
Pellet therapy is a form of bioidentical hormone replacement in which tiny, custom-compounded pellets—about the size of a grain of rice—are inserted just beneath the skin. These pellets release a steady, consistent flow of hormones into the bloodstream, closely mimicking the body’s natural production. Pellet therapy can help relieve symptoms of hormone imbalance, such as those associated with menopause in women or low testosterone in men. The in-office procedure is quick and virtually painless, and each pellet provides lasting benefits for several months before a simple replacement is needed.

Step 4: Follow up - Hormone Replacement Therapy

Pellet Therapy Follow-Up
Follow-up care is an important part of Hormone Replacement Therapy. Regular blood tests and symptom check-ins help ensure your hormone levels remain balanced and determine when it’s time for the next pellet insertion. The first lab work is typically done 4–6 weeks after your initial procedure to evaluate hormone levels, followed by visits to review your progress, discuss symptom relief, and plan future treatments. Since pellets generally last 3–6 months, a return of symptoms—such as fatigue, mood changes, or other signs of imbalance—may indicate it’s time for your next follow-up.

Best Results

Improvements in sleep, mood, energy, and libido are often noticeable within a few weeks to a month.

Duration of Results

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) pellets are typically replaced every 3 to 6 months, though the frequency varies by individual. Women often need replacements every 3 to 4 months, while men generally receive new pellets every 4 to 6 months. The exact timing depends on the patient’s age, activity level, stress, metabolism, and how quickly their body absorbs the hormones. Regular blood tests and symptom evaluations after the initial insertion help determine the optimal insertion schedule.

Hormone Replacement Therapy Treatment Recovery

Recovery after Hormone Replacement Therapy is usually quick, with most patients returning to normal activities within a few days to a week. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for 3–5 days to allow proper healing. Care instructions include keeping the insertion site clean and dry, minimizing pressure or friction, and avoiding swimming or hot tubs for 48–72 hours. Mild side effects such as slight swelling or bruising are common and temporary, but if you notice persistent redness, significant swelling, or discharge, contact your provider.

Risks & Complications

While Hormone Replacement Therapy is generally safe, potential risks include local issues at the insertion site, such as infection, bruising, or pellet extrusion. Some patients may also experience systemic effects, including mood changes, acne, or weight fluctuations.

Procedure Time

The hormone replacement therapy (HRT) pellet insertion procedure itself is quick, typically taking only a few minutes and less than 30 minutes in total for the entire process.

Back to Work

Most patients can return to work the same day or the following day, as Hormone Replacement Therapy is a quick, minimally invasive procedure requiring only a tiny incision with no stitches. To reduce the risk of bruising, drainage, infection, or delayed healing, it’s best to avoid vigorous activities—such as running, biking, or yoga—for 3 to 4 days after the procedure. Light activity, like walking or gentle stair climbing, is generally safe during this time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Hormone Replacement Therapy Pellets?

Bioidentical hormone therapy pellets are custom-compounded estradiol or testosterone pressed into small, solid cylinders similar to a large grain of rice. Pellet production is highly regulated by the FDA.

EvexiPEL Certified providers source pellets from FaramKeio, one of the leading 503B FDA-registered compounding pharmacies in the country. Each pellet is carefully compounded to the exact dose prescribed by your practitioner to meet your body’s unique needs and facilitate optimal absorption of your prescribed therapy.

What is the expected outcome of bioidentical hormone therapy?

Patients who seek hormone therapy are often seeking relief from uncomfortable symptoms of hormone imbalance including hot flashes, night sweats, hair loss, insomnia, weight gain, brain fog, low energy, moodiness, irritability, anxiety, fatigue, and more. With pellet therapy, patients experience relief of these symptoms as well as additional benefits, such as improved libido, mental focus, and reduced risk of disease.

The primary goal of hormone therapy is to address the root cause of these symptoms—hormone imbalance—and reach a state of hormone optimization.

Are bioidentical hormones safer than synthetic hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are derived from natural sources, such as yams or soy, and designed to be structurally identical to the hormones produced by the human body. This feature ensures that when bioidentical hormones are supplemented to correct hormonal imbalance, the hormones react in the same manner as the hormones naturally produced by the body, therefore reducing side effects, supporting disease prevention, and alleviating uncomfortable symptoms.

Compounded bioidentical hormones are not FDA-approved because each dose is tailored to the needs of each patient. The pharmacies and ingredients used to develop compounded bioidentical hormones are FDA-registered and approved.

Some bioidentical hormones, such as Prometrium®, a bioidentical progesterone, and estriol, a bioidentical estrogen, are FDA-approved.

There is no correlation to increased risk of breast or other cancer with the use of bioidentical hormones, as documented by countless peer-reviewed studies, analyses, and research.

Are there any side effects of Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Some patients may experience temporary, undesirable side effects as their body adapts to the treatment. The most common side effects are increased hair growth and skin breakouts due to increased oil production. If you observe any side effects, tell your EvexiPEL certified provider so that he or she may adjust your treatment plan as needed.

Does bioidentical pellet therapy increase risk of cancer like synthetic hormones?

Bioidentical hormone pellet therapy is not shown to carry the same risks of certain cancers commonly affiliated with synthetic hormones, such as oral estrogen, chemical progestin, or hormone metabolites. These forms of synthetic hormones were cited in the well-known Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) and accurately linked to certain forms of cancer.

Current research and data on bioidentical forms of estrogen and testosterone show a decreased risk of certain diseases.

How are hormones monitored during my treatment?

Hormone therapy begins with a complete lab evaluation to assess your health and hormone status. Using this information, your practitioner will develop a treatment plan. Your labs and symptoms will continue to be assessed prior to future insertions over the first several months of your treatment plan to evaluate outcomes and achieve optimization.

During your treatment plan, men will need to maintain recommended routine PSA screenings with their primary care physician and women will need to continue with recommended routine screenings with their primary care physician, including mammograms and gynecological exams.

How long will I need to be treated with hormone pellet therapy?

Each treatment plan is individualized; therefore, the duration of each plan may vary. For patients seeking to maintain the benefits of hormone optimization, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is the recommended treatment to help you feel your best every day. Discontinuing treatment may result in loss of hormone optimization and the return of uncomfortable symptoms of hormone imbalance.

What are the risks associated with hormone replacement therapy?

The plant-based hormones used in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) have not been tied to an increased risk of cancer or blood clots, as is the case with some synthetic hormones.

Common side effects of standard hormone pellet insertions include minor bleeding or bruising at the insertion site, extrusion of the pellet, discoloration of the skin and infection. However, Dr. Terri DeNeui designed EvexiPEL pellets and the EvexiPEL Method to optimize the insertion process and heavily decrease the risk of those side effects that can sometimes occur at the pellet insertion site.

The most common side effects associated with BHRT pellets after the first insertion process include increased hair growth, acne, oily skin, fatigue and increased body fat as the body gets used to the therapy.
