TL;DR: The first 48 hours after Liquid Lipo set the stage for your entire recovery. Expect visible swelling, mild tenderness, and a temporary sensation of firmness or warmth in the treated area. The most useful things you can do are stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity, sleep in a slightly elevated position, skip alcohol and blood-thinning medications, and follow the specific aftercare plan your provider gave you at Skin Rejuvenation Clinic in Edina, MN. Most patients return to normal activity the same day, but understanding what to do in the first two days makes a real difference in how quickly you settle into your final result.

Our Liquid Lipo treatment uses fat-dissolving injections built around deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring compound the body uses to break down dietary fat. Once injected, the compound disrupts the walls of targeted fat cells so the body can permanently metabolize them out of the treated area. That process starts within minutes of your session ending, which means the first 48 hours are when your body’s inflammatory and clearance response is at its most active.

How you support that response can influence how quickly swelling settles and how smoothly you recover. Patients who follow their aftercare plan closely tend to see less swelling, less bruising, and a smoother settling of the treated area. Patients who ignore aftercare guidance often deal with prolonged swelling, tenderness that lingers longer than it needs to, and results that take longer to reveal.

The First 6 Hours: Immediately After Your Injections

The moment you leave our Edina clinic, expect the treated area to feel warm, tight, and mildly tender. You may also notice that it looks slightly larger than it did when you walked in. This is completely normal and one of the most common early observations after Liquid Lipo. The visible swelling reflects fluid and inflammation gathering in the area as your body begins to respond, not the final look you should expect. The area may look fuller before it starts looking slimmer. Fat reduction develops gradually over the following weeks, not overnight.

During these first hours, your priorities are simple: hydrate, keep the area still, and let your body settle into the response. Drink water steadily throughout the afternoon and evening. Skip caffeine, alcohol, and any strenuous movement. If your provider approved cold compresses, apply them gently to the treated area for ten to fifteen minutes at a time, with breaks in between, to help manage swelling.

Avoid touching, pressing, or massaging the treated area unless your provider specifically instructed you otherwise. The area is more delicate than it feels, and unnecessary manipulation can worsen bruising and delay the smooth settling of the injected material.

Hours 6 to 24: The First Evening and Overnight

By the evening of your treatment day, swelling typically peaks. This is when patients often feel most self-conscious about the treated area’s appearance, so it helps to know in advance that this is expected. Continue hydrating, eat a light and balanced dinner, and avoid salty foods that can worsen fluid retention.

Sleep positioning matters more than most patients realize. If you were treated in the submental area (under the chin), sleep with your head elevated on an extra pillow to reduce swelling. If the treated area was on the abdomen, flanks, or thighs, sleep on your back if possible, or on the side opposite the treated area. Pressure and heat both slow the recovery process, so choose cool, breathable sheets and skip the heating pad.

Skip alcohol for at least 24 to 48 hours. Alcohol thins the blood, increases bruising, and dehydrates the body at exactly the moment your recovery response needs fluid. The same rule applies to aspirin, ibuprofen, and other blood-thinning medications unless your provider specifically directed you to take them. Acetaminophen is generally the safer option for discomfort management, but check with your provider first.

Hours 24 to 48: Day Two Recovery

By the second day, the treated area often looks worse before it starts looking better. Swelling usually reaches its peak before gradually beginning to improve. Keep drinking water throughout the day, eat balanced meals with less sodium, and continue avoiding alcohol and strenuous activity.

You can return to most daily activities on day two, including work, driving, and light walking. Skip anything that raises your heart rate significantly, including cardio, weight training, hot yoga, saunas, and steam rooms. Heat and elevated blood flow both worsen swelling and can prolong recovery.

Some patients also notice mild numbness or itching in the treated area during day two. This is a normal sign that your body is responding to the treatment. Mild numbness and itching are common parts of the local healing process and usually resolve within the first week.

The Do’s and Don’ts of the First 48 Hours

The clearest way to think through this recovery window is a short list of what supports your result and what works against it.

  1. Drink water consistently throughout both days, aiming for eight to ten glasses per day
  1. Sleep with the treated area elevated when possible, especially for chin or neck treatments
  1. Apply cold compresses in short intervals if your provider approved them
  1. Take acetaminophen for discomfort management if your provider recommended it
  1. Eat balanced meals with low sodium to reduce fluid retention
  1. Avoid alcohol, caffeine in excess, and blood-thinning medications
  1. Skip strenuous exercise, heat exposure, saunas, and hot tubs
  1. Do not press, massage, or manipulate the treated area unless directed
  1. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not press against the treated area
  1. Call our office if you experience anything outside the expected range

What’s Normal and What Warrants a Call

Swelling, bruising, tenderness, warmth, numbness, and mild itching are all expected reactions in the first 48 hours. It is also completely normal for the treated area to look larger before it begins to shrink. These are signs your body is responding to the treatment the way it should.

There are, however, a few signs that warrant a call to our team in Edina. Severe pain that is not managed by the medication your provider recommended, spreading redness beyond the treated area, fever, or signs of infection such as pus or a foul odor should prompt an immediate call. So should any unusual changes in the appearance of the skin, including blistering or discoloration that expands past the injection zone. These reactions are uncommon, but prompt evaluation helps rule out complications and gives you peace of mind.

If you are unsure whether what you are experiencing is normal, contact our office. We would much rather answer a simple question than have you worry at home.

What to Expect After the First 48 Hours

By day three of your Liquid Lipo recovery, swelling typically begins to decline, and the treated area starts to feel less firm. By the end of the first week, most patients have returned to their usual activities, including exercise, without any restrictions. Bruising may still be present but is usually easy to conceal with clothing or makeup, depending on the treated area.

The real reduction in fat volume begins around week two and continues developing through weeks five to twelve, as your body naturally metabolizes and eliminates the treated fat cells. This is why our clinicians build treatment plans around two to four sessions spaced several weeks apart, with a follow-up assessment two to three months after your final session.

Why Aftercare Matters at Skin Rejuvenation Clinic in Edina

Liquid Lipo Edina patients often ask what separates our approach from other clinics offering similar treatments. The honest answer is the aftercare framework built around every session. Skin Rejuvenation Clinic has been serving patients across Edina, Bloomington, and the wider Twin Cities since 2004, and our team has spent that time refining not only how the injections are placed but how patients are guided through the recovery window that determines the quality of their result.

Every patient leaves with a personalized aftercare plan, a direct line to our team, and follow-up scheduled at the intervals that make sense for their treatment area. That structure is why our patients tend to see cleaner recoveries and more predictable outcomes than they would with a less involved aftercare approach.
